Think realistic here as in an achievable goal. How many guns are required to be stored for TSHTF days coming in our future ?

Also, please post other options.........rifles vs handgun percentages......semi-autos.......bolt action, etc.

For one person or for one family?

For one person, I would recommend:

1 - LR .22 rifle (hunting)
1 - Semi auto rifle (battle rifle)
1 - shotgun (many uses)
2 - handguns (one for home defense, one for carry)

This would be my bare minimum recommendation.

EDIT - IMO, guns are good investment. You can never have "too many".

I had to go with the Full Monte myself. Mainly because I'm already there. You have to have "extras" on hand for those Lilly Livered, Wimpy,Family members, and/or friends who might show up at your door. After "Learnin'" 'em how to become a warrior, then they can be allowed to stay. (Hey, you're going to need bodies for your LP, and perimeter sentries). Plus, there is always the bartering idea.

1. 22 auto - small game and pest control
2. 30-06 or 308 bolt action - large game
3. 12 gauge pump 2 barrels - food and riot
4. 45 auto or 357 mag revolver - for social work.

This is per person.

If you do not have your reloading supplies or ammo, you may be too late.

Don't forget a nice pellet rifle for quiet hunting. Dove, rabbits, squirrels. A pellet in the ass can let someone know what could have happened!

Honestly, Juristic's list is a good start and I would just say for each family member add a battle rifle and/or a pistol. I would also add something for big game.

1 - LR .22 rifle (hunting)
1 - Semi auto rifle (battle rifle)
1 - shotgun (many uses)
2 - handguns (one for home defense, one for carry)

I agree...add something (.308) for big game.

However I would recommend you get the other guns first. The most imortant gun to get is the .22 (pref a ruger 10/22 ss) followed by a handgun (.40 cal).

In a true survival situation, you will have better success hunting small game (easier to find, kill, carry, and you won't have leftovers that will spoil).

minimum competency is required with one rifle, one handgun, and one shotgun. in that order.

but if you want to be able to arm the neighborhood militia, obviously 20 would be good. I like the SKS for the warlord arsenal. Cheap, give your carls em 100 rds on stripper clips and one of those VC chest vests and they're good to go!!

At least one handgun and rifle in the house. At least one handgun/SMG in each vehicle.

The question should be how many CALIBERS. I'd vote 3 - .22LR, 9mm, .308. However I keep a 7.62 Tok in my Jeep.

Boy, I feel sorry for those who voted no guns, because of the govt. That means if they came for them and you had one, you would relinquish it. So, in other words, you would give up that freedom. What other freedoms are you willing to give up? People like this scare me. They are the types who may turn in their neighbors when the time comes.

I am trying to work on getting another 3 hand guns(2 more glocks) and 357 mag

I also have got to get my rifiles and shotguns...... my question is would it be wise double up on the same type of rifle/shotguns just for safety sake of have spare parts.?

I firm believer 2 is one and one is NONE.

That's like asking how many seats a vehicle needs. It depends on what you are going to do.

First tell me exactly what "TSHTF" means and then we can discuss what you might do and what you might need to do it. In my experience, preppers have no idea what TSHTF means. Their preps seem to coincide with their hobbies: gun collectors assume it will be a gun fight, campers figure it will involve living in the wilderness for a while, gardeners save seeds, weekend warriors make up fantastic scenarios, etc. I would bet that not one person here can give a coherent description of what will or might happen. Of course most of you can make something up right away, and I bet it will coincide with your hobby!

Edited to add: I didn't mean to step on any toes with this tirade. All I'm saying is if you want to prepare you have to know exactly what you are preparing for.

I think it's good to double-up (or then some) on your primary firearms or calibers. Then parts kits/spare parts, ammo, and reloading supplies can be stocked up on to more effect. If you duplicate firearms that require magazines, those can be stocked up on to more effect, too.

Regarding the original question, I think 3-5 firearms is a good goal for most. It gives you the options of hunting big stuff and small stuff (or near stuff, far stuff), and having a good self-defense weapon. You're more likely to accommodate those needs and have a concealable weapon among your firearms, too. Should you want to arm someone else in your group, you'll have that option.

That said, I voted for 20+. I like the option of being able to arm a sizeable group and thereby defend a larger area (a neighborhood, perhaps) if I need to...or to stash firearms in various places and hope to have some I can get to in a real SHTF situation. Those aren't the reasons I have a lot of firearms, but they do kind of give me the warm fuzzies.

I took advatage of advise given by Mel Tappan....there are working guns and guns for fighting / personal protection.
Hunting both large and small game, 22's, precisian shooting at long range for large game, shotguns for birds, & small game.
Revolvers for carrying different loads, lite to strong.
Then there is personal protection, defence. semi-auto, large mag capacity...

so... the anwer is, however many YOU feel comfortable with to do all the activities YOU need to accomplish!

at least one battle rifle and one handgun per person, but the more the better if you can afford it! Sharing calibers between as many weapons as you can would be important too. You don't want to have to stock 20 different kinds of ammo.

That is exactly why I want to stay in the Glock family for that sole purpose..... the 33 round mag can fit 3 differnt pistols and the 15 rounder can do the same I think and 9mm ammo is a pleantiful as the sand on the sea shore. you can mutiple combos and options


I need to find the "glock" of shotguns,rifles(Savage arms?) and revolers.

shotgun, easy, skip the detatchable mags and stick to a mossberg 500/590 series in 12 ga; and get a 38 revolver

The "glock" of shotguns is the Benelli line of inertia operated semi auto shotguns - The Super Black Eagle II.

The "glock" of rifles - uh, that's a hard one to answer. There are so many but, it's probably not the Savage 110 or whatever you were thinking.

TSHTF description that you seem to seek is as follows. At least here in the USA.

NO POWER in any of the major cities (135 cities hold 95% of the population) for AT LEAST one month. That will also mean, no water (need power to keep it flowing). No natural gas or automotive gas (again, need power to make the pumps work). No food delivery after the first week or so.

That leaves you with 95% of the USA population at the mercy of 'whomever'.

Does that clear up TSHTF for you? You can throw in your own little things, like WHY it happened (not really relavent, once it's occured, yes?), or what will happen next, or which group will grab power (the UN comes to mind, with BILL CLINTON in charge of the UN and his wife as president). But basically, you could bring the USA to it's knees (most first world nations that rely on electricity for things to function properly for that matter) in less than a month. And things would go downhill from there. Watch the TV series 'Dark Angel' with a very young Jessica Alba. Specifically look at the 'background' the series is set in. Post EMP Seattle. That would pretty much do it.

Also, 2 pistols, 1 one each hip in case a your main hand becomes incapacitated. If you train well with your opposing paw, you'll be master with your main one.

I'm assuming that you know weapons, if this isn't the case you first needs to be a 22 rifle to learn to shoot.

If you have only one gun, that should be a 12 ga shotgun. A shotgun will fulfill every need from hunting to self defense. Since every firearm need is filled by a shotgun, you may ask why you need more. The next weapons are more specialized and therefore better at specific tasks.

The next weapon should be a pistol in a potent self defense caliber. This can be kept with you and will be much handier for self defense.

After that a scoped bolt or semi rifle in a big game hunting caliber. A lot of people here have suggested that you need a battle rifle. I suggest that in a world in which you "need" a battle rifle you are already screwed beyond redemption. Think about the situation that must exist to make a battle rifle were really necessary vs an accurate long range rifle. Which is more probable?

Next should be a 22 rifle, the uses for one of these is almost infinite. A case could be made that this is the one weapon that you should start with.

After the basic necessities are taken care of, go in any direction you wish.

Local store has a used Rossi 12 ga coach gun with 18 inch barrels for $300. Is that a fair price/acceptable weapon?

I'd take the Saiga 12 over the coach gun. Not only do you have the reliability of the AK design but you can now have the firepower of a 10 round mag !!

For close quarters battle, home defense, a Saiga 12 will more than handle the task.

If you want to keep intruders at bay from a distance - go with a Rem 700 with night vision or a 50BMG - distance from your threat is your greatest asset ...from a defensive posture

You only need one. It might be a pistol, a shotgun, or a rifle, so you would want one of each to cover your needs.

If you have more than that you are talking hobby, not defense.
